I also have a Great Uncle on my dad's side who survived being gassed in the trenches of WWI. When I was visiting him recently he said he really doesn't consider himself a veteran because he just got excellent job training and the only combat he saw was with a rat in St. Thomas, ON. My maternal grandfather was a sergeant in aerial camera maintenance during WWII.
